Advertising and Public Relations from the perspective of a Digital Studies student

About

I have always considered myself a people person, I enjoy being around others and collaborating effectively. So, in that sense I would say that I am a team player, and I would say on most occasions I prefer to put others before my own personal interests. Next I would like to direct attention towards one of my favorite and ridiculous sayings from coach Jim Harbaugh, and it is a quote that resonates with me quite a bit. “Attack the day with enthusiasm unknown to mankind”, it is a bit of a mantra that I have been going by for the past couple years, that is why I would describe myself as enthusiastic and energetic as well. I like to bring energy to the table when working with a team, and on the same note of a type of enthusiasm that builds the team up. Even though I describe myself with all of these extroverted traits, I strive to be as relaxed as possible in situations that may involve stress or not. I think it is important for us to be relaxed with most everything we do so we can effectively make good decisions, and if you don’t have the ability to be relaxed other emotions may cloud your judgement. Finally, in everything that I do I try to draw forth the most confidence I can, even if I need to fake it a little, I try to bring a sense of confidence to all functions. I truly believe that confidence is another key element to working in a team because confidence is a contagious feeling and it also allows for a sense of reassurance for the group.

  • What experiences have helped define myself as a person and a professional?

My family environment had always taught me to work hard and good things will come to you, however to not work so hard that you stress yourself out. In my experience, nothing is the absolute end of the world and you can get back up from anything, so there is no need to get overly stressed about something. Next, I believe my experience as a teammate in soccer has given me a better understanding how to effectivity communicate and collaborate with others. Also, I believe my upbringing in wrestling has given me a good sense of confidence and self-esteem. In high school I was put in plenty of leadership positions such as president of student council and the DECA club which gave me the experience of having the responsibility of being a leader. In college I have tried my best to be the best group leader I could be on any opportunity I had. I have also held a coaching position at my high school since being in college, so in many ways I continue to strive for team centric environments that require energy, confidence, enthusiasm, and collaboration.

  • My personal mission statement.

My personal mission statement is a simple one, but one that I believe is not highlighted nearly enough. My personal mission statement is to strive to make everyone feel welcome. I believe being as welcoming to new people, beliefs, and values as possible allows for better collaboration, and an environment that invites new ideas. Collaboration and new ideas are key in the Ad & PR world so being as inclusive as possible will make for an effective work environment and one that allows for safe and positive communication.

Digital Studies Perspective

I have had a wonderful time learning about different ethics and tools of the digital world that we live in through GVSU’s Digital Studies minor path. During this time I have come to find myself shaping decisions that I make professionally based on ethical teachings that I have learned through my digital studies courses. An example being web 3.0 and that I am extremely cautious of how we shape the new offerings that coming from the digital space and how their integration will affect our lives. Another being a continuous study through varied courses on how our data is being collected and what it is being used for, and all of this is going to change the digital advertising space in a big way. Whether more legislation is passed in the U.S. that impacts big tech’s data collection will have an impact on the advertising job market.
